The first-ever Windows NT series was released on July 27, 1993. Windows NT servers are developed by Microsoft where the NT stands for “New Technology”.

NT server was the first stable 32-bit architecture support program which was quite a big deal back then. Windows 3.1x and Windows 9x were supporting both 16-bit and 32-bit architecture-based computers.

NT family is a group of server-based operating systems who are processor independent, multiprocessing and multi-user based.

Normally Windows NT series was supposed for the general purposes and to discontinue the Windows 9x family. Microsoft Windows NT series ended after the arrival of Windows 2000.

Microsoft brought Windows NT 3.1 to improve Windows versions like Windows 1.0 or Windows 3.1 who were based on MS-DOS.

It was also developed by Microsoft which was released on 21, September 1994. NT server 3.5 was the second release of Microsoft in the Windows NT family.

The code name of Windows NT Server 3.5 was “Daytona” and the primary goal behind the operating system was to improve the performance of the operating system.

The main support for Windows NT 3.5 ended on December 31, 2001 while for Windows NT 3.51 workstation also ended on the same date.

Windows NT Server 3.51

This is the third release of Microsoft in the Windows NT family. It was released on May 30. 1995 which is exactly nine months after the Windows NT Server 3.5. Windows NT Server 3.51 is nine months older than Windows NT 3.5 and only three months younger than Windows 95.

Windows NT 4.0 become the successor of Windows NT server 3.51 a year later. Support for NT 3.51 ended in 2001 and 2002 for the workstation and server respectively.

An Intel 386/25 Pentium processor or higher with 16 MB RAM and 120 MB storage is required.  One CD-ROM drive, Super VGA or video graphics adapter is also required.

The operating system was released to manufacturing on July 31, 1996, and was launched to retail on August 24, 1996.  Windows NT server 4.0 is available in the workstation and server. Both Windows NT Server and Workstation contain the same functionality. Whereas, the server was optimized for supporting up to 4 processors.

NT 4.0 is the third successor of the Windows NT family. This edition embedded GUI (Graphical User Interface) similar to Windows 95.

Mainstream support for Windows NT 4.0 workstation was ended on June 30, 2002. However, they have extended their support till June 30, 2004, while Windows NT 4.0 server mainstream support ended on December 31, 2002, and the extended support ended on December 31, 2004.

Both of the editions (workstation & server) were succeeded by the Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server.

An Intel 486/33 MHz or higher is needed with 16MB RAM and 125 MB free storage to run Windows NT 4.0. Other additional hardware like VGA or SVGA compatible graphics card and CD-ROM are also required.

Windows NT server 5.0 also known as Windows 2000 server was released on February 17, 2000. T 5.0 was the successor of Windows NT 4.0 and it was the last version where the desktop and server versions used the same name.

This edition is highly known as Windows 2000 and only a few know it as Windows NT 5.0. It was Windows 2000 who introduced us to NTFS 3.0, Encrypting File System as well as both dynamic and basic disk storage.

Windows Server 2008 is released with version name Windows NT 6.1 whereas Windows Server 2008 R2 is released with version name Windows NT Server 6.2. On the other hand, Windows NT 6.3 is the versioned name of Windows Server 2012.

Windows NT Server 10.0

Both Windows Server 2016 and Windows Server 2019 is released with the same version name called Windows NT Server 10.0.
