The server operating system was released on 26 September 2016 and was publicly available on 12 October 2016. It is the predecessor of Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server Semi-Annual Channel and is also from the Windows NT group.
Originally it was released with the code name “Windows Server vNext” whereas before that it was “Windows Server Blue”. The server operating system was created to help corporations and companies to operate and thrive in the era of cloud and mobile phones.
Server 2016 is highly focused on its new core feature identity management. Basically, it is hybrid connectivity, cloud service and containerization to provide an excellent operating system for the admin.
As compared to previous versions, the major changes are the good support of Nano Server and containers with the improvements made to Hyper-V. Nano servers are developed for either a Hyper-V or Container host. It can also be used in a VM running applications workloads.
It is the server edition of Windows 10 and can be used for small, medium and big companies.

Windows Server 2016 Editions
Totally 3 editions of Windows Server 2016 were released which are Windows Server 2016 Essentials, Windows Server 2016 Standard, and Windows Server 2016 Datacenter. Other than these editions (given below) Windows Storage Server 2016, Windows Server 2016 MultiPoint Premium Server and Microsoft Hyper-V are present. As many users don’t need/want these versions so we didn’t bring these editions. Still, if you want these three versions as well, comment down below.
Windows Server 2016 Essentials
This is an ideal edition of Windows Server 2016 small businesses with basic IT requirements. Only one physical or virtual installation is the limit of Windows Server 2016. The essential edition provides Active Directory Domain Services at an affordable price. The Server can be used by users up to 25 or 50 devices. There are no CALs (Client Access Licenses) for this edition. 64 GB RAM and two CPU processor is the maximum limit, this server can support.
Windows Server 2016 Standard
This one is a core-based edition who is recommended for companies that work in slightly virtualized and physical environments. Standard edition is able to support up to 2 Hyper-V containers and 2 Virtual machines. There are minor differences between the Standard and Datacenter editions, except the number of Hyper-V containers and new storage features with enhanced security aimed squarely at protecting virtual machines and network communications.
Windows Server 2016 Datacenter
The datacenter is also a core-based operating system that is specially designed for cloud and highly virtualized data centers. This edition supports unlimited numbers of virtual machines and Hyper-V containers. Microsoft also offers free datacenter license for VMware users, according to thinkertry.com
Microsoft Windows Server 2016 has been improved rapidly, as there are more than 40 new features in it. Here are some key features of Windows Server 2016, which might grab your attention. I have tried my best to highlight all its features.
The operating system and virtual machine both are now safe due to improved security and Shielded VMs. Shielded VMs will help to protect any Generation 2 virtual machine from any kind of threat.
Major improvements are done like features and products in virtualization for IT professionals.
The ReFS (Resilient File System) is a long coming feature which is available now in Server 2016. ReFS is used as a high-performance, high-resilience file system intended with Storage Space Direct and Hyper-V workloads.
Data Center edition is more improved with virtualization, software-defined storage, and networking.
Windows Server Anti malware is also installed in it. This will you to protect you from malware whereas it also updates its self-time by time. Antimalware is not accessible by the interface and is installed by the default. If you want to experience the interface then you might need to go to Add Roles and Feature Wizard.
An agreement has been made with Dockers. Dockers have brought Windows Containers, whereas this feature enables users to perform virtualization in a standalone environment. The containers are isolated from one another, so it offers different resources, libraries to the operating system as access.
Nano servers support private clouds, web services, and data centers. Nano servers use PowerShell 5.0 and the nano server should always be used remotely.
Hyper-V is used to manage both virtual machines and virtual networking adapters.
Windows Defender is a preinstalled app used to protect your computer from malware or any other threats.
Linux Secure boot works to protect your computer while your computer is on startup. The Secure Boot is a part of the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) specification that protects a server’s startup environments against threats like the injection of rootkits and other boot-time malware.
The Hyper-V snapshots are now replaced with checkpoints, which allows users to roll back to the point earlier without restoring from a backup.
The network controller is a program used to monitor, configure, manage and troubleshoot virtual and physical network devices and services.
Storage Quality of Service is a feature present in Windows server 2016, used to manage and monitor storage for the virtual machines and to improve storage resource fairness.
Now, as we have highlighted all its features it is time to install it.
Like the features, the installation method has also been changed. In Windows Server 2016., the installation has been changed completely. Microsoft has removed GUI and any unnecessary optional installation. There is an option for full install or Desktop Experience.
